Record a song in your home studio

If you are a beginner producer, the idea of recording your track from scratch is intimidating, especially if you don’t know where to start. I’ve been there myself, but I’ve gained a lot of experience, and in this article, I would like to tell you about the steps of this process to make you feel more comfortable and hopefully inspire you to write your track. If your song is already recorded and you need someone to mix and master your track, I am more than happy to help you. Check out my works at ekmixmaster.com

First things first, you don’t need a lot of equipment to record. Most of the things you need are either built-in your DAW or can be installed as a third-party plug-in. The first thing we are going to talk about is the rhythm. Modern music is driven by rhythm rather than melody. And the main elements that create rhythm are drums and percussion. Very few producers have a drum set at home, but all you need is a drum loop. You can get one from Splice, for example. It’s s the easiest way to introduce percussion into your instrumental, and loops can be easily modified if needed. Another way to create a drum pattern is to use samples of different percussive elements and construct your drum pattern from scratch.

Another essential element of any beat is the bass. If you are good at playing guitar, you may record yourself playing, or if you don’t own a guitar, use virtual instruments. It does sound more static, but by tweaking different settings, you will get the desired sound. Drums and bass are the foundation of any song, that is why you should put them first. After you’ve laid the foundation for your track, it is time to write the melody. You can record acoustic guitar or a piano, or both, depending on the mood you are going for. You can even use your phone. Of course, the sound quality will be far from perfect, but if it is all you have, that will do. Once you’ve written the basic melody, it is time to layer your instruments. Virtual instrument plug-ins are perfect for that. They will give your track a professional sound. You can layer synths, guitars, pianos, maybe even strings, whatever you see fit. Many DAWs have virtual instruments built-in, so you don’t even have to install third-party plug-ins. Ideally, to use virtual instruments, you need a MIDI keyboard to trigger the instrument, but if you are on a budget, it is possible to program the laptop keyboard, and it will trigger the instrument.

Now that you have the instrumental, it is time for the most important part – vocals. Vocals are the focal point of any pop song, so you need to pay special attention to the quality of your recording. To record vocals, you need a condenser microphone. There are many options available on the market. Anyone can find something in their price range. It is also important to get the microphone shield and a pop filter. Just using these essentials, the quality of your tracks will improve significantly.
